Mission:

Kinship House provides comprehensive counseling, education and advocacy for foster children, adoptees, and foster and adoptive families.
They honor each person’s unique heritage and kinship bonds. They recognize the necessity and wisdom of serving children throughout their journey into permanent families.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Maintenance projects, painting, fence building.

• NW Children’s Outreach

Mission:

Northwest Children’s Outreach is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping families in the Portland area and surrounding communities. We help fill the needs of these families, providing clothing, infant care products, diapers, formula and many of the other necessities parents need for their children.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Sort through donated items and prepare them for delivery to agencies across Oregon.

Time:

Monday and Tuesday nights, 7-8:30 p.m.

• Transitional Youth

Mission:

Transitional Youth provides housing, outreach, and support to positively transform the hearts and lives of homeless youth with compassion, guidance and the Grace of God.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Transitional Youth has three 24/7 residential homes in the Portland/Vancouver area for homeless youth, with a fourth scheduled to open by the end of the year on a 350 acre horse ranch retreat center in Southern Washington. Mentoring, cooking a special meal for a house, outings, special activities, crafts, job shadowing, teaching opportunities of all sorts and any other creative positive way of having an impact in the life of a homeless youth. Facility work parties of all sorts, with ongoing needs for maintenance and special projects.

Isolated by Culture

 

• Bridgetown Ministries

Mission:

Wash feet, cut hair, wash hair, prepare and serve food, great dialogue and a whole lot more happen under the Burnside Bridge every Friday night in downtown Portland. This incarnational approach to reaching some of Portland's neediest people seeks to build bridges of love and encouragement.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Volunteers can provide assistance with prep as well as washing feet, washing hair, cutting hair or serving food. Supplies are provided by Bridgetown Ministries, however a suggested donation of $10 is welcome, but not required to volunteer. Groups must be scheduled to volunteer prior to serving.

They take a break from the Friday before Christmas to the second Friday in January due to the holidays.

Time:

Meet at mission center in North Portland for an orientation at 6 p.m. Volunteers will prep until approximately 8:30 p.m., then go serve under the Burnside Bridge (in groups) until 10:30 p.m.

• Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon—HIV Services

Mission:

The HIV Day Center serves low-income individuals living with HIV/AIDS. We are open 9-3 Monday-Friday. We provide meals, counseling, information and referral services, laundry facilities and supplies, clothing, showers, hygiene supplies, telephones, computers, phone message and mail drop services, massage, haircuts, foot care, acupuncture, bus passes, educational presentations, recreational and therapeutic activities, and day trips. Most importantly we facilitate a welcoming and supportive HIV-positive peer community. Our Daily Bread Express program provides home-delievered meals to individuals home bound with HIV/AIDS.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Join a fundraising/advisory committee. Hold a fundraising event in your community. Provide specialized services at the Day Center (massage, etc.). Cook and clean at the Day Center. Home deliver meals or transport Day Center meals. Provide a day trip for clients, in or out of town. (Up the gorge, to the coast, burgers and a movies, etc.). Maintain Day Center computers. Pay for bus passes for one or more clients. Visit home-bound clients (a program we would like to start).

Most able to use individual volunteers who can make an ongoing commitment to a role at the Day Center or Daily Bread Express or groups of volunteers who are willing to take on a one-time event such as a day trip or fund raiser.

Weekdays, 9-3

• Oregon Food Bank

Mission:

Oregon Food Bank works to eliminate hunger and its root causes ... because no one should be hungry.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Variety of tasks such as labeling boxes and bagging food into family size quantities. Working in a clean kitchen. Anyone 6 and over can participate.

Time:

Fridays, one time per month, 1-4 p.m. at the Oregon Food Bank off Columbia Boulevard.

• The Pearl

Mission:

The Pearl at Kruse Way is an Avamere operated rehabilitation health center and memory care residence.  The rehabilitation health center facilitates the transition from hospital to home and community for older adults recovering from trauma, surgery or other major illness.  The memory care residence provides care for those dealing with memory illnesses.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Co-Bible Study leader, Substitute Bible Study leader, musicians playing any instrument, song leader, communion servers, vocalists.

Time:

Every Thursday from 10am to 11am

• Tualatin School House Pantry

Mission:

Tualatin School House Pantry provides emergency food, once a month, to qualified Tualatin households in a welcoming environment. As a part of the Oregon Food Bank, they share in the mission to eliminate hunger and its root causes because “no one should go hungry.”

Volunteer Opportunities:

• Shop with Clients/stock shelves
• Transportation Coordinator:
   Schedule weekly drivers to Hillsboro and pick-up at local grocery stores
• Fresh Food Coordinator:
   Check refrigerators twice a week and arrange for purchase of Milk/Eggs
• Spanish Speaking Interpreters
• Northwest Medical Teams Dental Van - once a month assistance with clinics

Mission:

Well Being has a passion to serve the AIDS/HIV community by building relationships while enjoying a home cooked-meal, playing cards and board games, and sharing lively conversation.

Life-on-Life

 

• Big Brothers/Big Sisters

Mission:

To make a positive difference in the lives of children through professionally supported, one-to-one mentoring relationships with caring adults. We are committed to assisting children to achieve their highest potential by becoming confident, competent and caring individuals.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Community-based Program: An adult volunteer is matched to a child aged 6-16. The “Big” and “Little” share everyday activities and simple outings 3-4 times a month for one year.

Amachi: Included in the Community-based Program is Amachi, which is a Nigerian Ibo term meaning “who knows but what God has brought us through this child.” Amachi pairs volunteers from the faith-based community with children of incarcerated parents.

Site-based Program: An adult volunteer is matched to a child at one of our school mentoring sites, where they meet once a week during the school year, maintaining contact over the summer through phone calls, e-mail or mail. Site-based mentoring, which takes place after school or over the lunch hour, has a combined academic and recreational focus.

Individuals or couples welcome.

Time:

Once a week for one year.

• Lunch Buddies

Mission:

Bridgeport Lunch Buddies builds positive, loving, adult relationships into the lives of children who need them. It is a meaningful opportunity to show the love of Jesus Christ to a child who needs it.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Have lunch and attend recess with your "matched" student once a week, on a specific day and time.

Time:

Day of the week is flexible for the lunch buddy. It is important, however, that the lunch buddy tries his/her best to do the same day of the week each week. Time can vary depending on the grade of the child. This too can be flexible if the lunch buddy is only available at a certain time they can choose a child that has lunch at that time. The lunch times range from 11:30 and end at 1:30. The lunch time is 45 minutes (this includes recess).

• SMART

Mission:

SMART gives thousands of K-3 Oregon children the one-on-one support they need to learn to read and build brighter futures.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Reading Volunteers: Volunteers read with two children for one hour a week in public elementary schools, and the children receive two new books each month to keep and read with their families. It’s a simple approach that makes a world of difference.

Volunteer Coordinators: New in the 2008-2009 school year, volunteer coordinators will administer the program in the schools. For more information, please see the Position Announcement and the Coordinator Description.

Time:

Reading Volunteers: One Hour a Week (during school day) October - May.

Volunteer Coordinators: Numerous opportunities ranging in time commitment. Please see the Position Announcement for more details.
